The
Increasing Demand for Skilled Bilingual Workers
The increasing
demand for bilingual workers in the US has never been higher. What
is newly emerging though is a whole new labor market for skilled
workers who are not only multilingual but who also have a clear
understanding of the culture from the country from which they speak
the language. Finding bilingual employees with only basic administrative
skills is also on the rise, but the challenge hiring managers face
today is in finding pharmacists, doctors, technicians, engineers
and banking professionals skilled not only in their profession,
but also in fluently speaking a foreign language.
An extensive study by The Industrial & Labor Relations Review
shows the shortage in bilingual employees is translating to increased
wages for those workers who can speak a second or even a third language.
The reasons are clear, the booming influx of foreign residents in
the US requires that anyone providing services to immigrants in
the US speak their language. The same goes true for anyone managing
an immigrant workforce. Further, the ability to conduct business
on an international scale is becoming increasingly important, not
only for goods and services that are being offered to foreign countries,
but also to manage production and transport of foreign imports from
them.
The bilingual skills needed to conduct business does not stop at
knowing the language, however. Knowing and understanding the culture
of your clients and understanding foreign business etiquette is
increasingly important as well. The ability to read and write, attend
business gatherings, and knowing the do's and don'ts of the foreign
culture gives you a unique skill set that's in high demand, and
growing.
Giving your child a head start in with a language immersion
program starting at a young age will pay huge dividends
for your child in the future.
